Choiseul has been organizing Carnival celebrations for more than 40 years. The first real Carnival was in the early 1960’s and executed by Miss Catherine Pierre with the band ‘Daily Bread.’ The first 40 years of Carnival in Choiseul were sporadic with some years having great festivals and other years having none. Under the leadership of Mrs. Clara Edwards, in 2001 Choiseul’s Carnival reemerged as a powerful force with the biggest ever queen show featuring nine young ladies.
Since then Carnival in Choiseul has been very consistent offering a complete package including the Queen Show, Calypso Competition, Parade of Bands and Jour O Vert. The Queen Show continues to be the hallmark of the festival closely followed by the Carnival Launch and the Jour O Vert. Carnival is now the most popular and well organized festival in Choiseul and the two weeks of the year everyone marks on their calendar.
Choiseul’s Carnival achievements to date have been very encouraging. Miss Shernaya Stephen, Choiseul’s Queen in 2002 went on to participate and win the National Carnival Queen Contest in 2003. Two Calypsonians have also made it on the national stage, Albert ‘Sac Papier’ Charlery and Lawrence ‘Crooky’ Antoine.
