CHOISEUL FISHERIES COMPLEX

The Choiseul Fisheries Complex was built with assistance from the Japanese
Government and officially opened in March, 2003 and has been a dominant institution
in Choiseul Village ever since. It is home to the Choiseul Fishermen’s Co-Operative
Society Ltd, which was officially registered in 1972 and functions as a type of union for
our many fishermen. About 10 of Choiseul’s most enterprising men met and decided
that Choiseul’s fishermen needed to form an association so they could have rights.
The Fishermen’s Co-Op has a board of directors who handle its affairs from the sale of
fishing tackle and fuel, to the allocation of profits back to its members. Membership in
the Co-Op is gained by buying shares, like any other publicly trading company. Every
member must hold at least 50 shares and any member can cast a vote at general
meetings.

The freshest fish of all kinds is available for sale at the Fisheries Complex seven days a
week throughout the day. The last Friday of every month the Fisheries Co-Op hosts La
Fet Pweson, or Fish Party. It is free to the public and offers many kinds of local fish
meals, drinks, and music, often consisting of a local band or dance group.
