CHOISEUL CREDIT UNION

CREDIT UNION

The Choiseul Co-Op Credit Union has been in existence for nearly 45 years and is owned and operated by the people of Choiseul.

Choiseulians sit on the Credit Union’s board and decide what happens to their institution.

The Credit Union also has a policy of giving back to the community and it is this board that allocates funds for worthwhile community projects. The Credit Union urges their members to be wise with money and not over finance.

The Choiseul Co-Op Credit Union was the brain child of Parish Priest, Rev. Father Ludovic Chauvet who served in Choiseul as a French Missionary from 1953 to 1965.

Father Chauvet had studied the socio-economic activity of his parish as well as existing credit unions such as the one in the community of Desjardines.

At this time many of Choiseul’s homes were made from simple thatch and shingles, with this in mind Father Chauvet decided to act.

In 1960 Father Chauvet called a meeting at the now demolished presbytery with at least twelve parishioners to discuss creating a credit union.

Among the founders were Mrs. Irene Mondesir, Mrs. Agnes Jn. Baptiste, Mr. Antoine (Archie) St. Rose, Mr. Edward (Deco) Duflermood, and Mr. Norman Esnard.

That same year the Credit Union was started but it was not officially launched until 1963.

INSIDE THE CREDIT UNION

However, the Credit Union had to secure itself legally. All Co-Operatives/Credit Unions need to be registered under the Co-Operative Societies Act in order to gain legal status and government approval.

When a society has met the law's requirements it is issued with a certificate of registration. The Choiseul Co-Op Credit Union was registered by law on October 6th, 1970.
