PON GEORGE (Devil's Bridge)
Pon George, also locally known as The Devil’s Bridge, is located in the River Doree area of Choiseul, one of the oldest parts of the district. It is a small but eerie bridge built many years ago that spans a 200 foot deep canyon which can be accessed by a hiking trail. Today, many Choiseulian’s will not cross the bridge because many are said to have disappeared trying. The bridge did not last long after its initial construction. Time and again it was fixed and reworked but to no avail, it always rapidly deteriorated, so much so, that it was seen by locals as the work of the devil.
Eventually, a villager took it upon himself to devise a plan to ensure a safe bridge would be built.
The villagers told him how to contact the devil and he did just that, meeting alone with the horned, half-animal standing on hoofed feet. The devil confirmed he was the one in charge of the canyon and demanded payment in blood if any villagers wanted to cross; the price – one living soul. The villager agreed and the devil said he would build a safe bridge and claim the first soul that passed.
Before dawn, the day after the bridge was completed the villager who made the deal with the devil went for a walk with his dog. When he got to the bridge he stopped and sent his dog ahead. When his dog was halfway across the bridge he disappeared! Well, the devil was very angry he ended up with the soul of a dog and not a human but the wise villager pointed out that he had not specified what type of living soul he wanted, and not even the devil could argue with that. And to this day the Devil’s Bridge stands, spanning a 200 foot canyon, terrifying all those who dare cross.
